Phillies Preparing Offer for Cole Hamels

12 Jul

Jason Stark of ESPN is reporting that the Phillies are preparing a “Substantial Offer” for left-hander Cole Hamels in an attempt to determine whether they can sign him to an extension in the next two weeks.

Stark’s source said “They’re trying to sign him, and they think it’s going to happen. At least that’s what I was told.”

If what Stark’s sources say is true, Baseball in Philadelphia will change forever.

Read the rest of Stark’s article here.

From everything that I’m hearing, the major sticking point between the two sided is the number of guaranteed years the Phillies are willing to commit to.  Hamels agent John Boggs is pushing for 6-7 years for his client, but the Phillies are more comfortable in the 5 year range.

Weither the Phillies can afford Cole Hamels is a big deal as well.  A lucrative deal for Hamels is a risk that will cripple the Phillies for a number of years when it comes to the salary cap, and Ruben Amaro Jr. will need to be far more creative in future signings…

All he’s really done in the last few years is spend, spend, spend.

Cole Most definitely is worth it, but still it’s a huge move. He’s the best pitcher to come out of the Phillies system in the last 40 years.
