Phillies Acquire John Bowker

31 Aug

The Phillies have aquired John Bowker from the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Bowker is left handed and a lifetime .237 hitter with 17 homers in 561 big-league at-bats. He has played 19 games with the Pirates this season and hit .235, but Bowker has spent the majority of his season with Triple A Indianapolis, where he was hitting .308 with 15 homers and 76 RBIs in 105 games.

Bowker plays first base and outfield, which are the same positions that Ross Gload plays, so I would imagine there is some implication there with Gload’s hip injury. Gload has just three hits in his last 28 at-bats.

Bowker will join the Phillies for Wednesday’s game in Cincinnati. After Tuesday night’s game the Phillies sent down reliever Michael Schwimer to Triple A.

John will be eligible for the Phillies postseason roster should they want him there because he was acquired before September. It is unknown yet what the Phillies had to give up to acquire him.
