Weekend Tid-Bits

25 Jul

Here are a few great tid-bits from Elias Sports Bureau to wrap up the weekend.

•  The Philadelphia Phillies have a .722 win pct. behind Roy Halladay.  That is tied for the best team win percentage in a pitcher’s starts since 1900, with at least 50 games.

•  Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Michael Martinez each homered off of Chad Qualls in the seventh inning to help lead the Phillies to an 8-6 win over the Padres on Saturday afternoon. Qualls is only the third Padres pitcher to allow three home runs while recording one-or-fewer outs in a single appearance. The two other San Diego pitchers to do that were Doug Bochtler (June 12, 1996) and Dario Veras (April 16, 1997).

Prior to Saturday, Qualls had never allowed more than two home runs in any of the 508 regular season games he appeared in. Qualls pitched more than one inning in 98 of those appearances.

•   Cole Hamels struck out 10 Padres batters in his 3-1 victory on Friday night, marking the second time this season and the 18th time in his big-league career that he has recorded double-digit strikeouts in one game. With that total, he moved past Chris Short, who had 17 such games, and now has the second-most 10-K games of any left-hander in Phillies history; all he needs is another 52 such games to tie Steve Carlton’s team record (for lefties or righties) of 70.
