Phillies Trade Buzz 7/24

24 Jul

It’s starting to look like the Mets are going to need to lower their expectations or they are going to be stuck with Carlos Beltran, and his salary for the remainder of 2011.

The Mets are targeting some big time prospects like Domonic Brown, Zach Wheeler (Giants), and Mike Minor (Braves). I don’t see any of those trades happening because of Beltran’s expiring contract.  There is no possibility for the acquiring team to collect draft picks, so the Mets may ultimately have to lower their expectations.

That’s playing into the hand of the Astros who have a younger, and better player up for grabs in Hunter Pence. Pence has time left on his contract, so he’s not a rental.  At least with Pence a team would have the benifit of his services for more then a few months.  I believe that the Astros are counting on this, and are hoping that a team is willing to give up a little more for Pence.

The Phillies are interested in both players, but right now it looks like the sides are pretty far apart, but as we inch closer to July 31st, that could change.  Ruben Amaro Jr. has made a few splashes at the trade deadline before, but right now a move for Beltran looks to be way too costly.

I don’t like trading for Beltran. It’s so not worth it.

It would all depend on what the Phillies offered. I don’t see them giving up Brown for a guy like Beltran. Not if they wouldnt include him in the Lee/Halladay trades.
