The Lift We Needed

23 May

I’ve been wanting to say this for a long time…

Chase Utley will be activated from the disabled list today, and will start tonight.

Utley, who has been sidelined since the beginning of March, will bat second tonight against the Cincinnati Reds.

After meeting with head trainer Scott Sheridan and team doctor Michael Ciccotti, Chase Utley has been cleared to play, but with a few ground rules. The Phillies staff will monitor Utley closely, and want to make sure he is not overplayed. We should expect Chase to be given a days rest every few games to make sure that his knee continues to heal.

Chase’s return is huge for the Phillies and their offensive woes. Replacement players Pete Orr and Wilson Valdez have filled in well, but Utley’s presence in the clubhouse and great bat should provide the Phillies with a serious boost. A lot of the Phillies offensive woes can be attributed to Charlie playing with a lineup filled with replacements. Nobody knows what Chase will bring to the table, but his one has to think that his numbers will be far superior to Valdez.

Wilson Valdez is on pace for about 30-35 RBI for the season. I have a feeling Utley could have that before August. This division gets just a little bit tighter every season, and the Phillies are gonna need every run they can get.

I am sure that his presence alone adds much to the team. It will be great to see him in that 3rd spot again.
