Cliff Lee Will Sign With Philadelphia Phillies

14 Dec

cliff-lee-philliesjpg-5324959c5c6901f0_large.jpgIt’s a done deal. Cliff Lee will be wearing pinstripes this spring… Red ones.  Cliff has agreed to return to the Phillies! Sources familiar to the deal say that the Rangers and the Yankees have been told that they are out of the running. The deal is worth about $100MM over five years, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post via twitter. The contract includes an “easily reachable” vesting option for a sixth year, according to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick via Twitter.

All winter long it was everyone’s assumption that Lee would land in New York because of their ability to throw money in your lap, but Cliff has decided to leave millions (close to $50 million) on the table to follow his heart and take his chances with the Phillies, much like Halladay did when he opted to extend his deal and come to the Phillies last winter.

Lee’s agent had reportedly reached out to the Phillies saying that it was his destination of choice and asked them what they would be able to give him.  With that my best guess is that Ruben went back to ownership, who then made an exception and stretched their budget.  Lee was pretty sad to leave Philly and voiced that to many, so his return is a very personal choice.

The Yankees MUST be reeling right now since they blew it with Lee and missed out on Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth.  This deal will likely give leverage to Andy Pettite who had been thinking of retiring.  The Yankees really have no alternative plan now that they lost out on Cliff Lee.  Zack Greinke is the only other high value pitcher that the Yankees had any link to, but the Royals wouldn’t accept a trade from the Yankees for anything less then a king’s ransom.

A few sources are now reporting that the Phillies are in talks with the Boston Red Sox about a trade for Joe Blanton, likely just for a little cash.

Makes you wonder just how Ruben Amaro Jr. does it.

As more details come in I will update this story.

Got to say the signing definitely made some in the baseball world just drop their jaws to the ground and stare in awe that Philly pulled off the steal of the year here.
The top four guys in the rotation now makes this team almost as formidable as that old Braves team with those four horseman, I think one was names Maddux.
Seriosuly, this was a stealth move, but one that was needed to secure another WMD for the Phillies arsenal.
Congrats again on another dagger to throw at the rest of the NL this coming year.
