Phils Add a Local Lefty Reliever

18 Nov

The Phillies added a lefty to their collection of bullpen contenders on Wednesday. The Phillies agreed on a minor-league contract with former Florida Marlins lefty Dan Meyer.  Meyer will join the likes of Antonio Bastardo, Mike Zagurski, and David Herndon who will all be competing for a spot on a bullpen that currently only consists of Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, and Jose Contreras.

Meyer is a New Jersey native and a graduate of Kingsway Regional High School in Woolwich Township, N.J. Meyer appeared
in 71 games for the Marlins in 2009 and recorded a 3.09 ERA. In 2010, he
suffered a calf injury and had a 9.64 ERA in 13 games with the
Marlins. He had a 3.38 ERA in 32 games at Triple A.  The Phillies are taking a small gamble that Meyer can return to form and perform like he did before his injury.  The Phillies had scouted him in Triple A and were motivated by what they saw.  Meyer had not released any comment but a source close to him said that he was excited to return to the Philadelphia area.

J.C. Romero struggled mightily this past season as a situational lefty so the Phillies need to have some options.  Romero was unable to get outs so the Phillies had to part ways with him.  Meyer could be that guy.  He has an invite to Minor League Spring training, so we’ll see what happens there but expect the Phillies to keep shopping for relief help.  Rumor has it the team has interest in free-agent lefties Hisanori Takahashi, Pedro Feliciano and Brian Fuentes.

Ruben apparently reached out to Scott Boras about Werth, but nothing to report here.  As usual Ruben is mum and Boras was not available for any comment.  Not much else to report.

Thanks for the information on the above. I like to stay informed. Heard that Phillies are looking at Carlos Quentin as a replacement for Werth perhaps. Read some interesting entries on Phillies Nation as well. The big question mark still hangs in the air. I’m still holding out hope that they retain Werth. What do you think about Manuel coming in 5th for “Manager of the Year”? Charlie gets no respect I feel.

I think that the other Managers around MLB respect Charlie. I think our local media respects Charlie, but I don’t think that the National Media does. As far as the Manager of the Year goes, whatever. What you need to remember is that this is an award that’s given to a guy that succeeds with what they are working with. The Padres looked during Spring Training like a serious mess. They managed to have a great season thanks to Bud Black and his inventiveness. The Phillies are a tremendous team with, or without Charlie. Despite overcoming all those injuries some of these other teams did a lot more with a lot less.

Carlos Quentin is a pretty good player. I’m not sold on him, but I’m about thinking outside the box if Werth is outside our price range.
