Weekly Winter Tidbits Vol 1.

16 Nov

It was no surprise to anyone today that Roy Halladay won the National League Cy Young Award.  Roy won in a unanimous decision getting a first place vote from everyone on the panel.  Halladay is now one just five pitchers to win the title in the National, and American Leagues in baseball history, and just the 16th multiple winner.  His season was utterly spectacular despite falling short of a World Series berth.

Roy Halladay became just the 20th pitcher in baseball history to throw a
perfect game, when he threw one May 29 against the Florida Marlins, and just the second pitcher in baseball history to
throw a no-hitter in the postseason, when he threw one Oct. 6 against
the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1 of the NL Division Series at Citizens Bank

His triumph in the NLDS is now being looked at as the greatest accomplishment by any Philadelphia sports athlete anywhere, in any sport, and I’d be interested to know if anyone can think of a better one.

A few rumors this week were popping up on the web that the Phillies are making a “Big push” to keep right fielder Jayson Werth.  SI’s John Heyman said the a source close to the Phillies had told him that the Phillies are making a strong effort to keep the Bearded Wonder, and that the Phillies want Werth’s answer soon.  I fell for this one soon, but am now starting to doubt this story.  Part of me wants to think that the Phillies are trying to look like they made a big effort for the slugger, but don’t really have the intention to bring him back.  I think that they just want to make the fans think they tried.  Nothing is really going to happen with Werth until after the Winter Meetings, and I think it’s a bit strange that the Phillies are saying this now.

Kudos to the Phillies for retaining Jose Contreras.  2 years for $5.5 million is a pretty nice deal.  Contreras is a bit old at 38 but he was very useful throughout the season.  Good get Ruben.

I’m not going to be shocked if Dom isn’t back with the big club when the season starts. He still needs some at bats. He got totally exposed last year.
