He’s Back!

16 May

Get excited everybody, because if all goes well after being examined by Phillies physicians, Jimmy Rollins will be returning to the lineup as early as Monday night!!!  Rollins has been out of the Phillies lineup since April 13th after straining his right calf muscle in a pre-game warm-up for the Phillies home opener.

Rollins participated in extended spring training, and got into a game with the Class A Clearwater Threshers.  From what all of the reports have said, he looks good.  Rollins, the longest tendered Phillie is known to be the Captain, and spark of the Phillies clubhouse.  You can’t argue with the Phillies 22-13 record, and that they lead the Majors in average and slugging percentage.  But one can only assume that with Rollins back in the lineup, things will improve.  Not to mention that defensively that Rollins is a serious upgrade.

Shane Victorino has filled in tremendously as the Phillies lead off hitter.   Shane is Top 5 in the Majors in triples (Tied for first actually) and 4th in RBI.  The RBI stat is what’s most impressive though considering he’s a lead off man.  Hopefully this trend will continue for Shane seeing the he’ll probably drop down to six or seventh in the lineup after Rollins returns.  Charlie may wait until Rollins gets going to do this, but I kinda doubt that.  Rollins has earned that spot and I’d expect hearing his name called first by Citizens Bank Park announcer Dan Baker will be a great boost for Rollins.

Wilson Valdez, who has started to improve at the plate after a tough start, will most likely be optioned to another squad as long but he must first clears waivers.

Side Notes

  •  Lidge is on the DL … It’s hard to say where he goes from here, but it’s not as good as he makes it to be.
  • J.A. Happ is progressing nicely.  He could be returning before the end of the May but it’s not likely.
